The Lure of Fly-Fishing
Ask a
woman who knows how to cast a fishing line and she’ll tell you she
learned from a man. Her husband wanted a fishing buddy. Her father wanted a son.
Perhaps she slyly caught glimpses of an older brother during a family camping
trip. Fishing, she decided, wasn’t only a man’s sport.
“Anybody can fish,” Ashley Holladay says. She heads toward the Big
Thompson River or Walker Ranch on weekends.
“What makes it so wonderful is that it’s a challenge and there is a
certain amount of delicate expertise to be learned. But you can catch a fish on
the first day. Women pick it up faster than men, because they don’t try to
muscle the cast. Patience is developed.”
