WHERE THE
BUFFALO ROAM
By
Dianne Zuckerman
MOSCA
- Standing out like a beacon against an overcast, early morning sky, the sign graced by an illustration of a bison announces the entry to the Medano-Zapata
Ranch in the San Luis Valley. The image is a perfect symbol for both the site
and the efforts of the Nature Conservancy that purchased the ranch, its largest
biologically significant landscape in Colorado.
The
picture of the great, shaggy buffalo represents the preserve’s working bison
operation. But the image is equally apt as a reminder of how concerned,
committed people can help the natural world survive, despite human beings’
past environmental mistakes.
