Tackling a "Fourteener"
By Beth Krodel
Living
on Colorado’s Front Range, chances are you’ve
heard of "Fourteeners" – mountains that stand at least
14,000-feet tall.
They’re always in the media: Environmentalists
struggling to preserve them. Hikers falling to their deaths or getting struck by
lightning on them. And extreme athletes vying for speed records climbing them.
On July 26, Ricky Denesik of Telluride polished off all 54 of the state’s
traditional Fourteeners in 12 days, 15 hours and 35 minutes, breaking Boulderite
Andrew Hamilton’s record from last summer, which was just under 14 days.
