STALKING
THE WILD BUTTERFLY
Sam Johnson is dressed in full butterfly regalia: net with long pole, brimmed
hat pulled closely about the head, hiking boots, water and zipper baggie.
"Baggies are the only way to go," he says, crumpling a baggie into
his pocket. "You catch the butterfly, gently place him into a baggie and
pass it around. You can handle it but it doesn’t hurt the butterfly. And then,
you release him."
We’re in Aiken Canyon Preserve just west of Fort Carson outside of Colorado
Springs. The explosion of ordnance creates sounds of war not far away. But
here, on a summer day, we’re watching some of nature’s silent and elusive creatures: butterflies.
