POTTERY BY THE PEAKS
By Dianne Zuckerman
COLORADO SPRINGS - Earth, water and fire are pottery's essential elements.
How appropriate, then, for the art form to flourish in a city so in harmony with
these elements, from distinctive, red-toned bluffs to freshwater mountain lakes
to the searing high-country sun.
Colorado Springs beckoned to Artus Van Briggle in 1899. The Ohio-born artist
came in hopes the salubrious mountain climate would restore his health.
Unfortunately, the quest proved elusive for the talented painter and potter, who
died in 1904, at age 35, of tuberculosis. But although Van Briggle's life was
cut tragically short, he left behind a rich artistic legacy. Today, Van Briggle
Pottery produces a prolific output of vases, lamps, decorative tiles and other
items.
