IN TIME: Collecting Antique Photos
Chief Wolf Robe from the Southern Cheyenne sits for a portrait in Washington
D.C., June 1909. Light has fallen on his face and shoulders, and through a 19th
century discovery called photography, saved his presence.
Nearly one hundred
years later, we are transported as onlookers to that location and remarkable
moment--perhaps revealing a shocking truth.
As a witness to tragedy,
photography arrived in America during a profound event: the Civil War. Photography documented horrifying images, which
revealed scenes that no artist could blunt
with a romanticized brush stroke. An entire generation,
traumatized and saddened, sought stories beyond the battlefields. So when the federal government sent survey teams out West,
they included photographers charged with capturing a more uplifting tale: a breathtaking landscape
unsullied and ready to plow, wilderness brimming with game and timber,
caves hinting at silver, rivers glinting with gold. Photography marked the
opening of the American West and coincided with our complex history. And
while there is always a story in a photo, truth proved to be elusive--from
the very beginning.
