Collecting Folk Art:
Ordinary Whimsy
Nan and David Pirnack began collecting American folk art 47 years ago,
although they weren’t aware of it at the time. It all started when they bought
a house. Included in the purchase was a collection. Suddenly their trendy early
marriage Danish modern furniture looked drab settled next to a 19th
century carousel horse. The Danish has disappeared. The horse, frozen in his gallop, remains.
Since then, they’ve seen the rise in collecting all antiques and count
themselves among the members of a small but fanatical faction to be found among
collectors of American folk art. "There have always been covens of folk art
collectors that go way back." Nan says.
