FESTIVE FIESTA: Collecting Fiesta dinnerware
At
first glance, Fiesta dinnerware appears to have sprung from the 1950s. With bright confetti colors and sleek
design, perhaps, you say, it’s the product of American optimism in that decade
or post World War II euphoria. Fiesta's cheerfulness is thoroughly deceiving.
Ironically, Fiesta originated
during the Great Depression amid poverty, gloom and doom. And the designer wasn’t
American at all, but an Englishman, Frederick Hurten Rhead, lured to American
shores by a dinnerware company. Rhead designed the Art Deco shape and chief
engineer Victor Albert Bleininger fabricated the glazes of the vividly hued
Fiesta.
