Mindy Green's Recipes for Lavender

Lavender-infused cosmetic oil

  • ½ cup of dried lavender flowers (or other woody herb such as rosemary, if you prefer)

  • hazelnut or almond oil to cover

Coarsely grind the herbs in a blender and place in a jar with enough oil to cover. Check the mixture each day to see if you need to add more oil. Keep in a warm place and shake daily for about two weeks. Strain the oil through a cheesecloth. Place in a strainer and allow the oil to drip into a jar. Store in the refrigerator. This oil is for massage, bath oil or to use as a skin oil after a bath.

Bath Salts

  • 1 cup borax
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup finely ground oatmeal
  • 1 ounce herb-infused oil
  • 30 drops lavender essential oil

Mix dry ingredients together. Add oils, stirring. Pour ¼ to ½ cup bath salts to a tub of water. Use within three months.

Hair Rinse

  • 1 ounce dried herb (lavender or rosemary)
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 3 drops essential oil (rosemary or lavender)

To one pint of boiling water, add one ounce of dried herb and steep until cool. Add the rest. Strain and pour over your hair after a shampoo. Rinse.

Steam facial

  • ½ cup lavender blossoms
  • ½ cup calendula blossoms
  • ½ cup rosemary leaves
  • ½ cup chamomile leaves

Mix together. Add ½ cups of herbs to one quart of boiling water. Strain into a bowl and place a towel over your head to “steam” your face. Don’t place your face any closer than 12 inches from the bowl for about three to seven minutes. Use the cooled tea as a rinse.
