AN
ENGLISHMAN BUILDS A COLORADO MOUNTAIN GARDEN
John Brocklehurst has never taken his garden for granted. In a windswept
valley 8,700 feet in elevation, winter's temperature drops to minus 20
below. Summer rockets to 90 degrees. John has tended this garden for
14 years, learning with each season how to garden at high altitude in Colorado.
John’s wife Willi relaxes in a swing next to a swollen river. Hummingbirds zip and
dart from feeder to feeder. To the uninformed, it’s a scene that defies
drought or fire--but both are threatening John's community. "Come into the garden," he invites a
neighbor walking her dog. The garden is to be savored and, as if in a
sympathetic gesture, blooms profusely.
