THE LAST HURRAH OF SUMMER: A LATE COTTAGE GARDEN
Most garden tours take place in June when the grand perennials make
their entry. The roses are flush with bloom. Delphiniums stand tall and
straight. Poppies wave with brilliant color. So it’s unusual to find a
gardener who sweeps all aside to concentrate on a late summer show. But Lawrie
Diack Wilson does just that.
She’s a landscape designer whose business is frantic from April to July. By
August, it’s winding down. That’s when she has a chance to take a breath and
immerse herself in her own cottage garden, which is most spectacular from August
through September. And while there are plenty of annuals like cosmos for bold
blooms, Wilson first designed her late summer garden with a single thought:
semi-dwarf fruit trees.
